Visual Storytelling

Ecommerce Website Design

1. The Project

Sobon Wine Company has a rich history of family winemaking in Amador County with some of the oldest producing vineyards in California. They needed a new website that reflected their unique story while also keeping up to date with website best practices, integrated widgets offered by their POS software, and fixing some usability issues that come with older websites. I was asked to redesign their website to have a more modern look, migrate their domain to a new hosting provider, integrate their POS more fully with their website, and add pages that tell their story and engage their customers.

2. The Goals

Fix unintuitive navigation at check out and update the UI/UX to create a more modern and functional online presence.
Add accessibility features and age verification wall.
Add family history pages in the form of a timeline.
Integrate Commerce7 (POS software) widgets into website to give staff control over featured wines, allow users to make their own reservations online, and give users access to club membership online.

Research & Testing

Research

The first step in my process was collecting a wealth of information from various sources. I collected screenshots and notes from other winery websites to identify what was working and what wasn’t working. I also created extensive moodboards full of images, fonts, colors, styles, UI/UX, and visual identity that reflected the winery best. I created my mock up of the website and received feedback from the winery about the design and styling and then continued forward onto Wordpress.

Design Process

After migrating the old website over to a new hosting provider, I was able to create the subdomain and start converting the wireframe into a function website. A lot of the unintuitive design from the previous website was easy to fix but the imported stylesheets from Commerce7 (POS Software) caused issues on the front end that I had to carefully analyze and fix from my own stylesheets. The timeline was a challenge to get the responsive design to work smoothly but the final product turned out great.

Final Design

This project was a great experience and I learned so much about wordpress. I was able to successfully add the features needed for accessibility and age verification as well as integrating Commerce7 into the website while maintaining the visual identity of the website. Although I am still in the final stages of this design and working with management to get the final approval, I have already received great feedback on the huge improvement of usability on the Trade pages alone. I have high hopes for the rest of the evaluation as we move into the final stages of making the new website live.
